Day 4 - Goulburn to Canberra

Another longer day that avoided any of the rain that had been forecast.

We did a wee Tiki Tour of Goulburn that took us past Peter's Great Aunt's home where he used to spend hoidays as a kid. From there it was to the coffee shop that shared premises with the local Cannodale bike shop. As this was the case we decided to wait until the bike shop opened so that we could buy a couple of lights for our helmets  to aid our visibility, So as well as a bright top, a bright orange fluro flap at the back of my helmet, a flashing light at the back of the helmet and my Garmin radar strobe light that flashes as drivers approach as well I also  have the radar let me know a car is approaching that I can then check in my rear view mirror! Yes  Iake this riding safety, seriously.

I've seen lots of kangaroos (dead ones) but not a live one yet- hopefully I will get to see one outside of a zoo. The bird life is quite prolific and I enjoy the birdsong of the parrots however just as back home not appreciative of the magpies when they dive bomb you!

Most of our ride today had us well above 700 meters and the interesting thing to note was just how much farming is carried out at that elevation.

We also road on gravel roads today which were mostly not too bad and far more favourable than the only other option being the "Federal Highway" in to Canberra which we did not even entertain. Once off the gravel we wondered if the sealed surface was in fact that as it was very rough and the gravel was a better surface! With the heavy rains and flooding that has hit this part of the country the sealed roads are breaking up with huge potholes forming once the water gets under the seal (well that;s my totally uninformed opinion),,,

A day off tomorrow as we head off and explore Canberra which will not be a problem as this city has been designed with cycists in mind.
