Day 3 - Mittagong to Goulburn
The further out of Sydney we travel the more rural it becomes (obviously) hoowever it really wasn't until this afternoon that I saw sheep!
Again we were on cycle trails for a bit early on and then on to quiet country roads. Our mapping programme let us down for the first time as it had us head a couple of km"s up to the end of a no exit road! Not only that but between us and where we needed to be was the infamous Hume Highway! So we backtracked to the highway, assessed all our options and decided to cross the highway and then ride alogside of it for about 3 km. Yes it was busy however there was a very wide shoulder to the Highway so we were well away from the the traffic - the worst thing being the noise! It was so good to once again be off the Highway and back on country roads. It's unbelievable in my book but some people choose to ride the Highway which they are free to do, but I can not see any point in doing so.
For the best part of today we were riding through the "Highlands" and "High" they were as for most of the day we were at around the 700 meters of elevation. We saw signs warning of frosts, as well as Koalas, Wombats and Kamgaroos however I've yet to see a live one of any of those but did see a couple of Wombats that never made it across the road.
The weather brightened up today, we saw some sun and it was in the twenties as far as temperature.
After our longest ride so far (122 km's with about 1,200 meters of climbing) we arrived at our Motel for the night to find that they had us booked in to a King Double bed with no other bed in the room! Peter and I are close buddies and we have shared a lot on our travels but we are not THAT close!
Right next door was another two Motel that had a room with two beds so that's where we ended up. In the end two happy chappies.
